Celiac Sprue: Understanding the Facts about Celiac Disease
Celiac sprue is simply another way to refer to celiac disease. It is also called non-tropical sprue, and gluten-sensitive enteropathy. Celiac disease is a condition that causes damage to the small intestines and disallows the body from properly absorbing the nutrients from the foods that are ingested. Because no nutrients are derived from the foods taken in, the body starves and develops diseases - even though the individual may eat plenty.
The symptoms of celiac sprue differ considerably between children and adults. In children, the following symptoms are most common:
- Bloating and pain in the stomach region;
- Constipation and/or recurrent diarrhea;
- Pale-colored and foul-smelling stool;
- Nausea and vomiting;
- Stunted growth;
- Irritability;
In adults, the symptoms of celiac sprue that are most commonly experienced include:
- Pain in the bones, joints and muscles;
- Degeneration of the bones;
- Malnutrition;
- Recurring miscarriages;
- Infertility;
- Missed menstrual cycles;
- Degenerating teeth enamel;
- more…
The treatment for celiac sprue consists of strict adherence to a gluten free diet. Gluten is a protein that is found in barley, rye and wheat products. Those with celiac disease must avoid these foods and all foods products derived from them or that contain even trace amounts of them.
Celiac sprue that is left untreated may very likely result in malnutrition, osteoporosis, intestinal cancer, type 1 diabetes mellitus and more.
The best thing to do is to train yourself to become very aware of the labels on the foods that you purchase. Since 2006, the USDA has ordered foods to have information about gluten content printed on their labels. Just look for the logo that says “Gluten-Free” and you’re all set. Also remember that you have to select carefully at parties and restaurants when it comes to your food selections. With attention paid and a firm commitment, you will live a long and healthy life with celiac sprue. Just commit to making the appropriate food intake lifestyle modifications.
